Three years after making my first studies in Zbrush, I decided to go back to study 3d illustration. This is my first finished image in 3ds Max. This is an old concept that I thought it might be a good image to start studying. I've changed the design slightly, making less crazy. I made the model in zbrush using the dynamesh tool that is really interesting. After that, the retopology has been made in 3ds max and rendering using Vray renderer. I am very grateful to the artists Victor Maiorino , Victor Hugo and Pedro Conti who are my teachers! I painted the micro facial hair in photoshop. And the baby food I applied in post production in photoshop as well. Beside the help of Pedro, Victor and Victor, I used as reference for the shader setup the great tutorial of Adam Lewis. I hope you liked.

This is an illustration I did as a part of the book MSP +50, which is a tribute to the greatest comic artist of Brazil, Mauricio de Sousa. In this book 50 artists made their interpretations for the universe of the Monica's Gang characters, Mauricio's major creation. My first idea was to do a scene with almost the entire Gang, keeping the character's original design. I changed my mind, after some friends suggestions I decided to make Chuck Billy's (the original name in portuguese is Chico Bento) cartoon because it portrays very well a reality in Brazil.
In this image I tried a different resource and used Photoshop's Lensblur to obtain a more realistic blurring effect.
To do that, I created an alpha channel simulating a 3D Depth field pass.
It is a very complex scene, where I created a main center superior light, to make it tense and strengthen the illustration idea. However, because of having so many elements, I worked a soft area light to make the shadows less marked and leave the scene more clean.

First of all I like to study and define the lighting to see how the scene goes on.

Caricature of Ariano Suassuna, who is a playwrighter, Romanticism, and Brasilian poet. He is a great defender of brasillian northeast culture. I took almost a year to make it, actually I made a draft for lighting and shapes, after that I left the draw behind and a year after I decide to finish.
I made all the painting work with just one brush, and at the end I made contrast and shapen adjustments to enrich the strokes.

The Boss

This is a personal work. Sometimes I like to paint, to humanize the caricatures, so the animals look alike humans. To make this job I had many offices, chimpanzees and gorillas references.
The boss (chimpanzee) turned out to be the easiest to do, because I found a good reference with an expression and illumination really close to what I wanted on the scene. For the Gorilla I didn’t have the ideal reference. Actually I realized that I was using references of different gorillas, with different fur, and than it took more time to choose which type of fur I would paint, therefore it took a great deal of time the chosen fur. I started drawing a few basic scratches to define proportion and the scene movement. After that I finalized the sketch and started paint it, but under the contour. When the basic colors and illumination was defined, I started overlaying the contour, making the render, painting the details and textures. Finally I made a little change on the chimpanzee’s shape, adding saliva and the glass pouring to look like there’s some movement on the scene.

In this work a used two brushes, one for the main paint and other to paint the glow effect.
